effectively in group assignments?
Working in teams is one of the most important job skills
that one has to acquire for working in a professional field. To develop this
skill, universities normally design group assignments in such a way that you
work in a team and every member has some role or part in completion of the
whole work. Following are the important points that you should consider while
working in the group assignments.
1.
Ensure that contact details of everyone are with everyone: Whenever a group is formed, it is important that contact details
both phone and emails are compiled for the whole group. Along with this, it
should be discussed how group would communicate with each other and what are
their communication and meeting preferences.
2.
Make ground rules and guidelines for the group: Individuals have different styles of work however to work
effectively in a group; it is important that some ground rules and guidelines
are made that binding to everyone so that team could move ahead in one
direction in meeting its purpose and achieving its goals.
3.
Divide the tasks and ensure equal contribution: Whatever task is assigned to group, based on that and different
team members’ interests and skills, tasks should be divided. It should be
ensured that all members are being asked to contribute in an equal and fair
manner. Procedure of follow up and reporting shall be made regarding their
tasks. Parallel and series nature of the divided tasks shall be understood and
accordingly time required to complete the whole group assignment shall be taken
into account.
4.
Develop a procedure to resolve conflict:
It is quite usual that conflicts arise in a group activity however it should be
ensure that conflicts are constructively resolved through a proper mechanism
and at no point; communication channel shall be broken. Team goals shall be
given priority over individual goals and a fair environment shall be created.
5.
Plan for contingency: It is quite possible
that someone may not be able to complete his/her task due to some emergency
like falling sick or meeting an accident etc. Group should plan for such
contingencies as well and ensure that in such condition all necessary
rearrangements are done on prompt basis. Group members shall develop an
attitude to support each other.
Working in group assignments
is quite a challenge but at the same time imparts many different skills and
gives you a very valuable experience. Make sure your team follows the above guidelines
so that you could achieve maximum out of this activity.
